GUIDE TO CHOOSING GOOD QUALITY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
When preparing to build a project, you should learn carefully about quality construction materials to ensure a beautiful, durable, economical and safe project. To have a beautiful, safe and economical project, you should learn carefully about the quality of construction materials. The most important construction materials are sand, bricks, steel, stone, water and cement. When choosing quality construction materials, you should pay attention to the following points for each type of construction material:
1. Sand
You can tell the quality of sand by taking a handful and closing your hand. Dirt (like mud) will stick to your palm. Clay, grit, or other impurities in sand can be harmful to your project. These need to be sifted out of the sand before use.
A more scientific method of testing than the above is to pour sand into half a glass jar, add a little water and stir. The sand will settle to the bottom, and the dirt will appear clearly. There is a rule that if the mud or dirt content exceeds 3% of the total weight of the sand, the sand needs to be cleaned before use. In short, quality sand is sand that cannot contain clay, dirt, mica or shells...
One thing to note is that you should not use alum or salty sand in concrete and rough construction.
2. Cement
Cement is a substance that binds sand, stone and water together to form artificial stone. Cement is the most important ingredient in construction, plastering and pouring concrete. Choosing the right cement will ensure the solidity of the construction project. You should choose a reputable cement brand that is reputable and trusted by contractors and architects.
You may have to spend a lot of money on repairs later if you save a few thousand dong by buying poor quality cement. Remember that once you use cement for construction, you cannot replace or improve it like with roof tiles or some other things. If it is of poor quality, you have to destroy it and start over. The cost of buying cement is only a small part of the total value of the project. Normally, cement accounts for about 7% - 9% of the total value of the project. So when choosing cement, make sure you have made the right decision.
3. Stone
Coarse aggregates are usually small stones that increase the bearing capacity of concrete. The stone commonly used for concrete today is 1×2 stone (largest grain size 20mm – 25mm). Stone aggregates must be free of impurities when mixed with concrete.
When choosing stones, you need to pay attention to the following factors: Common stones are cubic in shape, do not have many impurities and have few flat particles; immediately remove impurities by sieving and washing.
4. Water
If you use tap water from the water supply system, there is no need to worry. If you use well water or other sources, the water must be clean and free of impurities.
Absolutely do not use sea water, alum water, pond water, brackish water, water with oil or grease to build a house. The amount of water suitable for the cement ratio will help the construction to be solid.
5. Concrete and mortar
Concrete is a type of artificial stone material formed by molding and solidifying a mixture of reasonable proportions of components including cement, water, sand, stone and additives if any.
In which, stone and sand (aggregate) act as a load-bearing frame; the binder and water (glue) surrounding the aggregate particles act as a lubricant and at the same time fill the gaps between the aggregate particles; mortar is a mixture of sand, cement and water in a certain ratio.
The quality of concrete and mortar will decrease (strength does not reach the design) if there is no reasonable and proper maintenance regime. For plaster mortar, it should be continuously kept moist for 7 to 10 days; for concrete, it should be continuously kept moist for 10 to 14 days.
6. Tiles and how to choose tiles
Bricks can be checked by observation. Generally, good bricks should have a standard shape with sharp edges. Similar color also ensures good quality.
Check the quality of the brick by breaking a brick, it will not crumble into many small pieces. You can hit 2 bricks together, the quality brick will make a clear sound or try dropping a brick from a height of about 1 meter, a good brick will not break.
Another way is to soak the brick in water for about 24 hours, then check its weight. If the weight increases by more than 15%, you should not use this type of brick. For example, a 2kg brick should not weigh more than 2.3kg after being soaked in water for 24 hours.
7. Steel
Concrete has good compressive strength but poor tensile and bending strength. To overcome this, steel bars need to be placed in the concrete to provide the necessary strength. Hence the term reinforced concrete. Choose steel from reputable brands on the market. You should consult your architect about the size and type of steel.
8. Formwork
Formwork is used to make molds for pouring concrete. The formwork must be of the correct design size to ensure the bearing capacity of the concrete. In fact, this is the contractor's job. You can note this issue with your supervisor when constructing.
9. Electrical and water equipment
These devices will be installed inside the building; therefore, you should choose products with reputable origin and quality and have a design suitable for the house.
10. Introducing a reputable design & construction consulting service provider
