1. The fundamental role of walls in construction

• Load-bearing wall: load-bearing wall with the function of carrying the self-weight and transmitting the load of the above structures and the live load of the building. The load is transmitted through the floor beam system to the wall and transmitted to the foundation of the building. ​Currently, there are many types of materials that make up walls, but there are some that are used more than others. Earthen walls, wooden walls, brick walls, stone walls, reinforced concrete walls and many other types of walls made of other materials.

When classifying walls in construction by material, it can be seen that in our country today, the most popular are brick walls and concrete walls. Brick walls have many disadvantages such as causing environmental pollution during the production process, slow construction, low load-bearing capacity, and too large self-weight.

According to the construction method, there are 2 main types of walls: monolithic walls and prefabricated walls.

• Monolithic walls: Are walls built or cast in place. Brick walls are often built manually, one piece at a time (there are many types of bricks: burnt bricks or unburnt bricks, solid bricks or hollow bricks... weight ≤ 3kg/piece). Classification of walls in construction includes in-situ reinforced concrete walls, often used for high-rise buildings constructed using static or sliding formwork methods.
• Prefabricated walls: are small, long wall panels or large panels (blocks) that have been prefabricated and assembled together.

• Decorative walls:

• Soundproof and soundproof walls:

​When classifying walls in construction, people use soundproof walls; used in projects that require high sound quality such as concerts; performances, recording studios, multi-purpose halls, cinemas, karaoke bars, etc. Soundproof walls or sound-absorbing walls are made from materials that can isolate; and absorb sound such as soundproof foam, medium-thick plaster, and rough-surfaced bricks. Sound-absorbing walls are made from materials such as foam; felt, wood or walls with rough surfaces to prevent sound reflection.

• Lightweight partition walls:

​This type of wall only has the function of separating spaces from each other; or dividing areas into smaller spaces. The basic characteristics of this type are light weight, easy and quick assembly and change. A commonly used type today is gypsum wall panels with a thickness of 1 - 1.5cm; connected to a system of shaped aluminum frames. In addition, some other materials are also used such as industrial wood; or some other modern composite materials.

• Fireproof walls:

with walls built in industrial works; or kitchen areas of civil works. The main materials are built with refractory bricks with temperatures up to more than 1500ºC. Refractory bricks have mixed metal components.

• ​Walls resistant to weather and chemical corrosion:

Walls made from specialized materials; have the ability to resist specific types of chemicals. For example, the walls of offshore structures must be able to resist salt corrosion.
