BAMBOO PILE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

1. Scope of application of bamboo pile construction measures

Bamboo piles are used to reinforce the ground for constructions with low load transfer or to reinforce the wall of the excavation pit. Driving bamboo piles is to increase the compactness of the soil, reduce the void coefficient, leading to increased bearing capacity of the ground.

Bamboo piles are used in areas that are always wet and flooded. If bamboo piles work in wet soil, their lifespan will be quite high (50-60 years or longer). If bamboo piles work in dry or erratically wet soil, the piles will rot very quickly.

Bamboo piles should only be driven in flooded soil so that the bamboo does not rot. If driven in dry soil without water, the bamboo will rot, which will have the opposite effect of weakening the ground.

Do not drive bamboo piles in sandy soil because sandy soil cannot retain water. Usually, bamboo piles are only driven in clay soil with water.

How far apart is enough to drive bamboo piles? Normally, people drive 16-25 piles/m2 because they are easy to divide (pile spacing 20-25 cm). Thicker than that, it probably cannot be driven.

Currently, there is no specific calculation theory, but we can do the following: in the design phase, assume that after driving bamboo piles, the ground reaches a certain tightness (through the void ratio), from which the bearing capacity of the ground can be calculated, using that as the basis for foundation design (or we can assume the bearing capacity of the ground after driving piles).

After driving piles, re-test to check the bearing capacity of the ground. If it is not much different from the assumed bearing capacity, there is no need to modify the design (in reality, there are few testing experiments, but they are mainly based on experience).

2. Pile requirements

1. Bamboo used for poles must be old bamboo over 2 years old, straight and fresh, with a minimum diameter of over 6cm (usually 80-100mm), not warped more than 1cm/1m of pole. Using solid bamboo (or commonly known as male bamboo) is best. The thickness of the bamboo tube should not be less than 10mm. If the bamboo is hollow, the minimum thickness of the bamboo tube should be 10-15mm, so the gap in the bamboo core should be as small as possible. The distance between the bamboo nodes should not exceed 40cm.
2. The upper end of the pole (always taken towards the base) is sawn perpendicular to the pole axis and 50mm from the bamboo node, the lower end is beveled within 200mm and 200mm from the node to make the pole tip.
3. The length of each bamboo pole is from 2-3m. The length of the pole cut is 20-30cm longer than the design length.

3. Pile driving method

There are 2 basic methods of pile driving when implementing bamboo pile driving construction measures as follows:

1. Manual pile driving method: Use a solid wooden mallet weighing 8-10 kg for 1 person or 2 people to drive. To avoid crushing the pile head, cover the pile head with iron. After driving the pile, the crushed part of the pile head must be sawed off; if the pile head is crushed before it has gone deep, remove it. In case the ground is soft and bumpy and when driving the pile with a mallet, the pile should be lowered by the loading method, combined with shaking. This is a difficult job, taking a lot of effort and time.
2. Mechanical pile driving method: You can use an excavator bucket to drive the pile if possible. In some places, the concrete hammer has been improved by adding a cap to drive the bamboo pile. In this case, use a small capacity air compressor; the pressure when compressed is about 4-8 atm; One air compressor can be used for 5-6 bamboo pile drivers at the same time. This method has the advantage of being fast; less laborious and can drive bamboo piles in foundation pits with less than 20 cm of water.

4. Pile lowering diagram

If it is a pile clump or a pile field to reinforce the ground, then drive from the middle outwards. If it is a pile strip or a row of piles, drive in sequential rows. For piles to reinforce the wall of the excavated hole, drive from the row of piles farthest from the edge of the excavated hole inwards. In Hanoi and some neighboring provinces; bamboo pile construction is usually done in the following order:

• Digging the ground
• Driving bamboo piles
• Spreading a layer of plastic or nylon
• Placing steel reinforcement and pouring concrete (raft foundation)

Result: The adjacent houses are built and used but there are no cracks or tilts. In some cases, due to poor construction or other reasons, there may also be subsidence (although very little).

So placing the foundation of the project directly on the top of the bamboo piles of cajuput is probably good. As for using loose materials (sand, stone), it is likely that only the increased strength due to the effect of compacting the soil of the bamboo piles of cajuput piles can be used.

5. Techniques to know when constructing bamboo piles

With the current measures and procedures for constructing bamboo piles; ensuring the construction techniques must be sure to clearly understand the technical requirements below; to complete the process of constructing bamboo piles in actual construction.

1. The pile must be erected straight before driving; during the process of driving bamboo piles, the pile must always be kept straight and driven vertically. Do not let the pile go down in an inclined direction.
2. For the pile head: The pile head must be lined with a pad to avoid breaking the pile head during the driving process.
3. During the process of driving bamboo piles, only drive one pile at a time; do not drive many piles at once to avoid the case of the lowered piles being tilted.
4. The pile driving must achieve maximum rejection. To achieve this requirement, attention must be paid to the pile testing work.
5. If the pile head is broken after driving, it is necessary to cut off that part of the pile head. Or the pile head above the groundwater level, it is necessary to cut off the part of the pile head above the water level to ensure that the pile is not infested with termites when used.
6. Piles must be evenly distributed over the foundation area
7. Note that when workers sharpen the piles, they should only sharpen the top end 10-15 cm long; if they sharpen the piles more, they will lose the design length; leading to failure to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the foundation.
8. Drive the piles in order from the outside in, following the spiral burial path.
