WHAT IS A PROTECTIVE CONCRETE LAYER?

    1. What is a protective concrete layer?

    The protective concrete layer is the concrete layer covered on the outside of the building. To prevent the steel layers in concrete from being exposed to external environmental conditions. Helps protect steel layers from oxidation leading to steel corrosion, seriously affecting the structure of the building.

    The thicker the protective layer, the more durable and sturdy it is to protect the structure.     2. Standards for reinforced concrete layers in Vietnam

    Currently, our country has a number of documents regulating standards for reinforced concrete layers. Each document has its own regulations, but they all aim at the standard that the concrete layer must not be smaller than the diameter of the reinforcement.     - Reinforced concrete layer standards according to TCVN 5574:2018 in section 10.3.1.2

    If based on the provisions of this Standard, the reinforced concrete layer must meet the following criteria:

    • Reinforcing steel and concrete need to work together simultaneously.
    • Pay attention to the issue of anchoring reinforcement in concrete as well as the arrangement of joints of reinforcement details.
    • Ensuring the integrity of steel reinforcement under the impact of harsh environments.
    • The concrete surface must not be cracked or rough.
    • Has the ability to withstand heat of the building structure.
    • The protective concrete layer is not allowed to be smaller than the diameter of the reinforcement.

    - Reinforced concrete layer standards according to TCXDVN 356:2005

    Based on this standard, reinforcement will be divided into 3 types:

    • Longitudinal steel reinforcement
    • Durable reinforcement, structural reinforcement and distributed reinforcement
    • According to the large thickness of concrete at the ends of prestressed structures.

    - Some other standards

    In addition to the above standards, people also rely on a number of reinforced concrete layer standards according to TCVN 9346:2012 in table 1, section 4 and reinforced concrete layer standards according to QCVN 06:2020/BXD, Appendix F.

    - Based on TCXDVN 356:2005

    For load-bearing longitudinal reinforcement, the thickness of the protective concrete layer must not be less than the following factors:

    • Reinforcement diameter
    • Cables
    • Slabs and walls with thickness: From 100 meters or less: 100mm (15mm), over 100 meters or more: 15mm (20mm).
    • Rib beams and beams with height: less than 250mm: 15mm (20mm), greater than or equal to 250mm: 20mm (25mm).
    • Column: 20mm (25mm)
    • Foundation beam: 30 mm
    • Mounting: 30 mm
    • The entire block with concrete lining is 35 mm, but without concrete lining it is 70 mm.

    Note:

    - Values ​​in brackets will be applied to outdoor structures or wet locations.

    - For 1-layer structures made from lightweight or hollow concrete from B7.5, the thickness must be greater than 20mm. As for panels without plaster, the requirement must be greater than or equal to 25mm.

    - For a single-layer structure made from honeycomb concrete, the thickness must not be less than 25mm.

    - For distributed reinforcement, structural reinforcement and tough reinforcement, it is divided into 2 cases:

    • When the member section height is less than 250mm, choose a thickness of 10mm (15 mm).
    • When the member section height is greater than 250mm, choose a thickness of 15mm (20 mm).
